What a fabulous day it was yesterday at the ICC in Birmingham where finalists of The National Learning Disability and Autism Awards came together from around the country for judging day!
We were incredibly proud to have been nominated and to be finalists for England in FIVE categories (see previous blog post).
It was an early start from sunny Dorset. The mini bus was packed with a picnic and excited team members, and T from Summerwood and D from Apple House (D is a finalist).
Fact: Birmingham has its own microclimate resembling The Artic (it was freezing!)
The tension and excitement were palpable as our group waited for photos and interviews with the judging panel. There were photo opportunities and props to make the memories just that little bit more entertaining. Here’s D:
John, registered manager at Summerwood, was seen asking if he could keep the Superman cape and mask which were also provided. He was reminded that he’s already a superhero in our eyes.
Fact: Birmingham does not experience spring or summer. There is autumn then winter then autumn. (Did we mention it was freezing?)
John, Jayne, Milosz and D each had a fifteen minute interview based upon which the judges will choose one winner from each category. Winners will be announced on June 29th at a gala evening which we will all be attending.
After the judging was finished, all took a stroll along the canal and explored a little more of this great city.
It was a huge privilege to be finalists and to meet so many incredible people at the event.
Apple House wish all the finalists the very best of luck! We look forward to meeting again in Birmingham at the gala awards night!
